Five Stanwood teens out driving on a closeby country road decided to test their speed. The Acura was going an estimated 85 MPH in a 35 when it left the road, spun in the air, rolled over and landed on it's wheels in the ditch. 2 of the boys had graduated from Stanwood high last year and the 2 girls and another boy are students now. The accident happened within 2 miles from my house at 2PM in the middle of the day on a straight country road.
The driver, home on leave from the Army, 19 yr old Mason Derrick died, the other teens have critical and serious injuries.
No drink or drugs involved----just speed.
Local kids are decorating the memorial barn near town.
Let's all slow down a little bit. MB

You may remember the post on Ocala DP about the five teens that were killed in a speeding wreck on the runway where John Travolta lives...I guess it's the old feeling that it will never happen to me...a feeling especially strong when young.

A very sad story! My parents live in the countryside and they often tell me about similar accidents where teenagers were involved.

What a horrible tragedy. I'm glad none of the other kids were killed at least. I hope they recover from their injuries.
Oh how sad, Mary Beth. What is it with kids and cars????? Teens think they will live forever ---and don't realize what can happen when they don't follow the rules, or use good sense. That is just horrible. I'm so very sorry. Did you know any of the families???? Hope the others will be okay.

Youth has "NO FEAR" and they think they will live forever. This only goes to show that there really is no need to Speed. My heart goes out to the parents of all that were involved. Seems the youngsters in making the Memorial Barn will take the lesson to heart. Peace
It is almost worse that no drugs or alcohol were involved, clear minds should not do these things, even if very young.
This happens often even here, usually on Saturday nights and many young lives are lost for nothing.

This brings to mind the drag races «Louis» participated in on country roads in the Texas panhandle when he was a teen.
Sad, indeed, that these five young people died.

What a horrifying event. You captured. I've been away from the news and had not heard about it. Your pictorial memorials are well done. Not only as memories, but as much-needed warnings. These things are so stupid, and affect so many lives for decades to come. We have a number of crosses on Highway 30. Several were for teenagers this year, but this event you marked may be the dumbest I've ever heard.
Goodness that's sad! The spontanious memorial and barn are interesting rites to see. My thoughts are with their families and friends, and I hope the teens make a full recovery.
