He does take up the whole road.

Farming in the Valley is going full throttle now. Plantings have been going on for the past few weeks and more to come. Plantings are is succession too because you cannot harvest everything on the same day. The soil has to be worked up before planting too.

The mountain is out---SWF

Mt. Rainier showed herself briefly Saturday morning. She then proceeded to go in hiding again. Those thin clouds hid her behind their curtain. Pic from my deck in the morning. MB

Big Red

I been watching this mare for awhile now. She is in a pasture down the road from me. She just kept getting bigger and bigger. All the other mares had their foals--but not her. Went by there yesterday and---yehaw---she had a babe by her side.

Buzzed

This early evening the Geese at the pond were making a big fuss and I went out to see what was going on and there was a big bunch of geese out there. They wanted in the pond but the resident pair (with babies) were trying to keep them out. When they saw me they took off and circled 4 times, honking madly. I tried to take pics of them and this is the best I could do with my little point and shoot.

Field Trip

Lets dig here!
Come on over here!
We're on our own field trip.

Padilla Bay is a National Estuarine Research Reserve and the perfect place to have a field trip----where else can you play in the mud and identify all kinds of creepy crawlies. As you can see the tide is out--way out.

Seed Cabbage

Harvesting seed is huge in the Skagit Valley. Some plants grown for seed are: Spinach, Cabbage, Kale and others. This is a pic of Cabbage going to seed. The first seeds or seedlings are planted in the summer and then wintered over-all the time growing--heads are formed and in the following spring the heads are chopped in half and the plant goes to seed, male plants are weeded out and by fall the plants look pretty dead. The seed heads are chopped down and layed in rows and left until a harvesting machine scoops them up, shake the whey out of them and the seeds are deposited in large boxes on trucks and of to processing they go. Interesting to watch.

Bees are set out in Spring.

A river runs through

The backside of downtown. A few years ago the river rose to the back of the stores.
Debris coming down the river.
The river breeching low spots.

The Skagit River and other local rivers are running a little high right now because of recent warm weather causing snow melt in the mountains. It's not real high, just fast and dirty. Up river--closer to the mountains gets hit first. This is the river at Mount Vernon, WA.

Ghost Mountain

I took this picture today early evening--6:10 PM from my deck--looking South. this is my view from my bedroom and the whole front of the house. The weather today was very warm --70s--(that's warm here)--and slowly it became overcast and low clouds rolled it. It is supposed to rain tomorrow. Rainier hadn't been out all day when suddenly there it was--very faint and just hovering. This is Mt. Rainier (elev. 14, 410 ft) it is an active volcano and puffs occasionally.
If you click on the pic to enlarge it you will see a bird up to the left and who knows what else.

Who's watching who

I was watching this little bird--A type of sparrow I think (someone help me here)--flit around with a piece of fuzz in his/her beak, when he landed on the fence and put down the fluff from his beak and watched me. Lucky I had my camera with me and got this shot.

Lighthouse at Fort Casey

Admiralty Head Lighthouse.

Built in 1861 and rebuilt in 1903, the lighthouse guided tall ships toward the Whidbey Island shore where they could fill their sails with wind. It was the last brick lighthouse designed by renowned German architect Carl Leick - its walls 18 inches thick to withstand the earthquakes that shake western Washington.
Admiralty Head's Fresnel lens was extinguished in 1922, but the lighthouse today welcomes visitors, weddings and tour parties with the help of dedicated volunteers. Enjoy our rich historical exhibits, browse our gift shop, and help preserve and restore Admiralty Head Lighthouse by becoming a member of Keepers of Admiralty Head Lighthouse

Tennant Lake

Part of the boardwalk
The observation tower
The amazing disappearing Blue Heron.

I visited Tennant Lake last Sunday. It is actually called Tennant Lake Interpretative Center. The lake is a shallow lake surrounded by extensive wetlands, fields and forest. The Interpretive Center is in an old farmhouse built in 1906 and donated to the county in the 1970s. There are trails, a place to slip in a canoe, a 50 ft. observation tower and a beautiful fragrance garden. The trek through wetlands is all boardwalk. the boardwalk twists and turns through a marsh teeming with plants and wildlife.

California Quail

I used to see Quail quite a bit but not lately. So when I heard their familar sound I searched and found this guy acting as lookout up in some shrubbery. They always post a sentry to warn of danger. I didn't see or even hear any others. They are native from southern Oregon through California but were introduced in Washington and British Columbia. Its not uncommon to see the whole family, 10 or 12 or more, zipping across the road.
