Rexville

Just down the road from us---over the North Fork of the Skagit River bridge is this wonderful grocery store, gas station and deli cafe.  All that is left of the community of Rexville although the Rexville Grange is right around the corner.

Mary Queen of Heaven

This beautiful church is in Sprague, Wa. which is in the eastern side of the state.
 The population is close to 500 hardy souls. The town was plotted in 1880 and named for former American Civil War Union general John Wilson Sprague. 

The Parish is part of the Catholic diocese of  rural Spokane, Wa

The parish Priest goes to 3 churches on Sunday
St. Michaels in Reardon, Wa.  Mass at 8:30

St. Annes in Medical Lake Mass at 10:30

Mary Queen of Heaven in Sprague Mass at 12:30


Coming down the highway you may see this

 We went to Sunday Mass there.  The inside and altar are just exquisite

Today is raining and overcast but the past few days have been sunny and while not really warm--but comfortable

Interesting Barn

The family purchased the property in 1883.  
 The barn was used to store hay, cows and horses. It is presently used for the storage of farm equipment.

Looks like a dreary day when I took these pictures.   I took them in February----Lotsa rain then

 Today it sits on 40 acres and the land use is 'farm'.

  The house was built in 1877 and has been well maintained.

 First of all this little Hummer showed up yesterday for lunch. 
we have  Hummingbird visit all winter

 First Finch I've seen this Spring

 This male Northern Flicker caught my eye.  He is so handsome

 Trumpeter Swan.  Usually there is a good flock of them but maybe these two just wanted to be alone
The Swan winter over here from October to just about now, soon they will be winging their way back to the frozen North

Window reflection

Looking in the kitchen window from the deck.  You see my sweet fairy on a wall and the reflection of the awning---I thought it was nice looking

Chasing the sunset

We were out looking at the Sunset at one of our favorite spots.  We got some nice pictures and directly opposite is Mt. Baker---Bob got an excellent shot--not so much of the mountain but the glow from the sun.

 And I took this shot through the weeds

 I tried to take a video of the zillion birds-- well-- Snow Geese.  Turn up the volume and don't laugh--I don't know how to edit a video and i put my phone down so there is a bit of ground to view.  The video was taken with my phone
Well it doesn't seem to work now it did last night.
It's working again---WTH? 

Historic barn

This barn is on Dike Rd. in Mount Vernon.  It is a Dutch Gambril style with 2 cupolas and weather vane.  It was built in 1905
Here is a bit of history from the Heritage barns of Skagit County:
The barn was supported by 90 surrounding acres for cattle, hay and seed. The huge timbers and cedar siding likely came from clearing those 90 acres. The barn was used for milking in to the 1950’s. Several milking stanchions still hang in the barn and some beams are worn smooth from cows rubbing their necks against the wood. Whitewash can be seen on some of the beams. The cavernous loft stored hay for surrounding farms, and the rope and pulleys still hang from the ceiling. The pulley attachment on the sliding door shows patent dates of 1901 and 1903. There is a faded hand-lettered metal sign which reads “Dance Saturday Night”. Barn owls now live in the loft and can be seen leaving at sunset for nightly hunts. Seed bag tags were found in the barn. Seeds were probably stored in the barn before being loaded on barges which came up the Skagit River and into the sloughs to pick up produce. The seeds were going to Lilly’s of Seattle (now Lilly-Miller). A metal roof was added when leaking began to damage the timbers in the loft. The barn is currently used for alpacas and hay & grain storage.

Critters

So we were cruising the Valley checking on the Daffodil fields looking for gold .  We did see one field with cracking color and we saw critters too

 And the first Evening Grosbeak I have seen this year

We will go back in the next few days because the forecast is for sun sun sun and that should pop these babies open.
