Oyster Run 2008

This weekend was the famous Oyster Run that takes place every year out this way. The roads are clogged with mighty bikers and every teeny tiny tavern is surrounded by beautiful bikes. The whole thing ends up in Anacortes which ropes off main street and the fun either begins or ends. Bands play, dancings is on going, booths galore and just plain fun. Last year Anacortes figures there were 15,000 plus visitors and many don't even get up there.

Potato Harvest

Potatoes are huge in the Skagit Valley. I read in the paper that in 2007 potatoes were a 65million dollar crop. This is a very small valley. We had a cold and very wet Spring so the farmers couldn't plant when they wanted so everything is late so harvest will be late also. The farmers are hoping for a dry fall so they can get all the spuds out of the ground, otherwise they will rot.
After the farmer checks the potatoes and decides if the size is right they cut or burn off the tops of the plant. This stops the potato growth. Then when the processers are ready out come the harvesters. The orange machine scoops the spuds from out of the ground and up the belt they go and into the truck. These newer machines do such a slick job there are virtually no potatoes left in the ground. No gleaners to follow the machines. The truck goes to the warehouse or processer and then we have mashed potatoes for dinner. LOL

What is in the sky??? Sky Watch

This was taken in eastern Washington, at Moses Coulee, on one of my road trips. Do you think it is a Flying saucer? Click on pic to enlarge and you will see a UFO

Rugosa Rose

The fruit of the wild rose has the most vitamin C of all wild fruits. 20 times more vitamin C than found in oranges. The farther north the rose hips are harvested, the richer they are in this essential vitamin. The hips turn to a lustrous red or orange when ripe and may be either globular or elliptical in shape. Try to gather your hips in the wild, away from dusty roads just before the first frost is expected, though they can still be used even after they are frosted and soft.

So pretty+++random morning shots

Found this guy near Coulee City, WA. on the way to HS Rodeo. I cannot find out what he/she is. Looks like a Western White (Pontia occidentalis) but the markings are much darker and the color of the body is different. Does anyone else know? Oops__
Kylee has to use the computer--I'll be back.
So I am back and I just took Kylee to school and saw the sun trying to break out from the gray sky and THEN there was icy cold Mt. Rainier glowing in the distance.
So.......................

Need Help?

As I was driving down some back roads in Stanwood farmland by the Stilliguamish river I found this sad sight. The brambles are almost overtaking the house and barn too. The house couldn't have been abandoned too too long ago. It has a TV antenna.
Today is the first day of Fall so here are some pics of trees turning red. MB

Harvest in the Valley

This is a field of Cauliflower--the leaves are so huge the actual white heads of cauliflower are hidden.
This is how cauliflower is harvested. It is cut, handed to the wrappers who are the back of a truck, wrapped and boxed right in the rows.

I came back! Page 2

Of course the little boys came with me!! We did some rock climbing--minimal. Played in the water--cold! Drove around besides watching the Rodeo. Eastern Washington is very different than Western Wa. Washington state is divided from North to south by the Cascade mountains. So each side is unique. Wet on the west side and dry on the eastern side. Great contrasts and great beauty on both sides.
