Fort Casey guns

The other day when I was visiting my Mother we went to Fort Casey. I posted some pics then. today as I was looking over some pictures I noticed that as I was taking a picture of Mount Rainier it showed the top of part of the fort. It was so dark so I cropped it and lightened it up and it looked amazing. You can see how the fort was hidden from view and one of the guns was up. the guns retracted so when they were down the area looked like a bluff to invaders from the water.
Construction on Fort Casey was started in 1897. Her big guns were on on disappearing carriages, which could be raised out of their protective emplacements so that the guns were exposed only long enough to fire. Anyway I thought the differences were interesting. MB

Okay, I may have missed something here, but what was the fort protecting, or rather, whom from?
Love those photos!

How ingenious mankind can be in the art of war. If only we could be as inventive when it comes to the art of peace.

I was thinking similar thoughts to Brattcat...we are very good at putting together machinery to kill people (no matter the cost)...while we find it so hard to put together systems to help people (often because they're too "expensive")...

Lovely shots, though, MB.

And thanks for your input on the Cedar Key plant. Staghorn Fern must be what it is because I sure like the name and I think I've heard that before...

Well, I kinda figured Bayliners were made out your way; isn't that from where all good things come?

I left you a note on Florida Fotos - the picture of the Blackwater Inn was polarized.

And thanks re: your comments about the sunrise!

Thanks for the interesting information about the fort and its guns. I'm glad the theory behind the fort never had to be tested in a war.

Wow---it's neat to see some of the fort while looking at pictures of Mt. Rainier. Fort Casey looks like an interesting place.

How was your Mom???
Hugs,
Betsy

That big gun seems to be aiming at the poor little Keystone Ferry. Sure hope it misses!

I've seen very similar guns at Fort Steven's in northwest Oregon. It's fun walking around those old forts. Great photo ops too.

Similar to the gun emplacements along the Pacific coast at Fort Cronkhite in the Marin Headlands. In the 1960s, the guns were replaced by Nike missiles, which in turn were replaced by scraggly-looking Marin County 'peaceniks'....
