Oso Landslide

Yesterday we thought we would try to see how close we could get to the Tragic disaster--the Oso Landslide.   When the press say it was about 55 miles from Seattle that would be as the crow flies.  We live much closer but we traveled a bit farther in a round a bout way to get there.  We first went to Darrington the closest town up river.  We then followed the river until we saw the roadblock and the Sheriff.  We parked as there was no more car travel.  We walked down river to another roadblock and were told to get a good vantage point was about 2 miles up a narrow road. A nice hike. Off we went only to be stopped by 2 more sheriff Deputies said nobody's going up.  but after a little sweet talking they let us go warning us to get out of the way of emergency vehicles and Power trucks.  We went as far as we could then the road was too narrow and we didn't want to get pushed over the cliff by fat power trucks.  It was quite a hike.  
We did talk to a Fox News person who wondered why we got through but they were turned away.

 The Deputies said the only suspect-looking one would be the dog and I said this sweet ole thing.  LOL



The map show the distance from Stanwood to Oso along the river.  West Stanwood is in the flood plain.  The two x's above Stanwood are where my house and Bob's house are.  The line from Oso to Stanwood shown on the map is the River itself.   As you can see there is no direct route well one that's not blocked.

This is downriver.  a muddy mess. Here is the landslide itself.   I really am glad we couldn't get any closes.  We talked to an independent reporter who said it was just awful.  The slide itself is one mile wide.  Imagine!

The river is making it's way through the mud and debris and will create it's own channel so probably no major flooding down river.
