Lynden (pop 10.000) is about 5 miles south of the Canada-US border. And about an hour+ from where I live. It was established in 1874 and incorporated in 1891. It is very Dutch and the whole town shuts down on Sunday. Just like in the olden days.

The town lies in a broad valley along the winding path of the Nooksack River, which empties into nearby Bellingham Bay. The surrounding area is filled with dairy, raspberry, strawberry, and blueberry farms. The region saw significant Dutch immigration in the early and mid 1900s, spurring the growth of dairies. Today, Lynden pays homage to its Dutch heritage through locations such as Front Street, which has been made-over with a Dutch theme, complete with its own windmill. Along that street, you'll find a Dutch bakery, Dutch restaurants and numerous antiques stores. Local supermarkets contain Dutch food sections, and Dutch is still spoken by some of the town's residents

Interesting post and lovely images. I'd like to use this funny bench for my blog of benches...
Cool info on this small town... flashback to the way it was.
Looks like an interesting place to visit. I like "old towns" even if they have been slightly altered to look that way. Keeps history and traditions alive.

I was going to make a funny comment but thought I'd get in "dutch."
Where did that phrase come from I wonder?
Cool town. Love the restaurant and I'll betcha they serve delicious food!
What a great place.
What a cute little bench! I don't really know what Dutch cooking is like, but I imagine that resto to be cute and cosy.
Funny, all I can remember is the windmill and I went to college in Bellingham. You've been doing a lot of town hopping lately.
Now that's a niiice windmill, very pretty & extravagant!
Very Dutch indeed. How lovely!
You could have fooled me, especially with that last shot!
Lynden looks like a beautiful town. I've been to a similar town in Michigan -- Frankenmuth -- which also has a strong Dutch presence (and great food!).
It sounds and looks wonderful. Even my small hometown doesn't close down on Sundays like it used to. When I was younger I called that progress, but now I'm finding I miss the days when everyone and everything would slows down.
It is a charming place to visit, indeed.
My Dutch friend thoroughly enjoyed this town when we traveled through a few years ago.
Oh what a neat little town, Mary Beth... I'd love to visit Lynden sometime... Did you sample any good Dutch food while there?
Hugs,
Betsy
A very lovely town and thanks for the history. Did you have any Dutch food while there? Peace
Lynden is such a fun place to visit. We went up there to the Whatcom County Fair last time we were in town. It was a great little (actually not so small) fair. I loved all the produce in the competitions. We missed the famous Moowich. Got there too late and they were all sold out. - Margy
