The fire Lookout towers are excellent places to stay. This one used to be manned by the Rangers and was fully rigged in case it was needed. Last winter some jerks found it (that had to ski in) and totally wrecked it and stole stuff. So all the fire looking equiptment was removed (the fire finder, maps, etc). Pretty sad.
Six years ago was The Biscuit Fire in the Kalmiopsis National forest and burned 500,000 acres and also a neighboring tower looked out call Snow Camp. It has since been rebuilt. I was down canoe-ing on the Chetco River (in the area) that year. It was kinda scary. The National forest also has the most northern stand of Redwood in the US. Very impressive and fun to hike in.

MB, Thanks for taking us on this really great hike with you. So good to lay eyes on a redwood (a lot of my hiking has been in redwood country). The waterfall is charming and I would love to hear it as well as see it and maybe see how cold it's running. Fuzzy or not, that's a magnificent wing span.
Sorry to learn of the theft from the tower. My grandfather used to pack in supplies for the Forest Service in California back in the day when they did it by horse and mules (you would've liked that, I bet). He'd also go up into the back country and clean out springs and such. To spend that much time without seeing a soul for days. Your canoe trip sounds like fun, too.

There are always jerks everywere.
The place is beautiful. I miss camping!
Wow. How fantastic that you are out seeing these places.
So peaceful. Just what I needed this morning! Sounds like a truly great hike.
It is beyond "Louis's" ability to comprehend why vandals would do that - and to have had to ski in to do it. Sometimes it seems we aren't such a civilized society at all...
On a happier note, it was a pleasure to accompany you, even if only photographically, on your hike. Thank you for inviting us!
Nice photography.
Beautiful hiking with you. I wish. I wish I could hike a trail like that. Unfortunately, smoking, age and other issues makes my walking around our block an event and something I write down in my daily journal.
you got some beautiful pictures.
I always feel so disturbed when I hear or read about vandals. It just makes no sense.
I've never heard of staying in fire lookout towers before. How cool is that? I've climbed a few and know that the views are outstanding. (I'm afraid of heights though so climbing back down is pure terror, LOL.)
Beautiful photos and I can see why you had a good time.
These are some very pretty shots & I sincerely hate to hear about vandalism & thieves - That makes my blood boil! I was recently broken into and I just hate these people that can't or won't keep their stinkin' hands to themselves!!!
Love the photos MB - would love to go hiking with you - you have such an appreciation of nature.
The first one brings to mind "up a lazy river in the noon day sun". Lovely.
Great to have you back, MB! Thanks for sharing your retreat into the wilderness with us. Looks, sounds like the perfect place for getting back to nature.
I'm honored that you'd like to use my blue jay on your desktop, MB!! ;-)
So beautiful! Thanks for posting these. Makes me want to head for the hills.
Makes me want to emigrate!!!
Hiking Through sounds like a terrific approach to life. I enjoyed your photos.
