The birds are going to love these. They are so pretty.
Do anyone know what this second tree is. The leaves are long and skinny and the pods are spiny and sharp like a cactus. The pods look like a horse chestnut except for the spines. Take a guess!!
The tree and pods are Chestnut (Castanea mollissima) a horse chestnut is a different tree altogether Aesculus hippocastanum.

Well the first one means you should have plenty of birds. The long leaves remind me of the lemon and orange trees I have in pots but the fuzzy thingamajig with sharp spikes has me stumped. Peace
Wikipedia leads me to believe that second tree is a "true" chestnut, which apparently horse chestnuts are not.
I can see its fall at your place. I wish we had all the berries here like you do.
Great photo of the Hawthorn berries - lovely color.
The second tree is an American Chestnut. Wouldn't want to be touching those spiky fruits....
I'm terrible at guessing anything, lol, but the photos are great and the post is fantastic!
I bet the birds are all over the hawthorn berries now!
Hmmm. So THAT's what true chestnuts look like. Apparently chestnuts were once a very common tree here but some disease (many years ago) has practically wiped them out.
I wonder that maronis(Edelkastanie, Leo dict.: European chestnut, sweet chestnut) grow so far north!
Here in Austria, maronis only grow in very warm regions of the country.
But maybe it is much warmer in Washington than I assumed!
In winter, you can buy roasted maronis everywhere in Vienna. I will post a "Maronibrater" this winter!
