Steptoe Butte Wa.--Colfax Wa.

Last Sunday we drove from Ritzville to Steptoe Butte.  It is in flat wheat country--this 3600ft lump of a mountain.  One can drive up to the tiptop and see for miles and miles. Snow on one side and almost none on the other.

Native peoples attained to sacred spirit quests here at their power mountain. It was customary for Indian youths entering adulthood to undertake a special journey, or spirit quest, in order to receive a special guardian power from the Great Spiirit that would protect the person thoughout their life. It was traditional to be alone on such a quest to some remote place and remain there for several days without food until the spirit was revealed in a sacred dream.

Hope they didn't go on spirit quests in all that snow. - Margy

Wow---what a fabulous place, Mary Beth... I'd be willing to check it out to receive that special power... BUT--don't think I'd want to be there alone!!!! I'd take George with me... ha

That is truly a "lump of a mountain" isn't it???? Awesome.

Betsy

La butte est impressionnante.

I am craving, yearning for that landscape. It's been a while since I was in the Palouse.

I REALLY like the picture of the sun over the snow. I can see why some people find the these places spiritual.

So much wonderful information. All the pictures are great, but I love the second one. The epitome of "rolling hills"...lovely.

I like your snowy Steptoe Butte. You also go some fine long range shots from the top. A great place to get some shots. I've never been there in the winter time.

It looks so foreign to me, MB, as there's nothing here like it...that I can think of, anyway).

Glorious photos, MB? Did you climb that mountain all the way to the top or can you drive up there?

Very interesting info, too.

I think if I were to go off to a remote place for several days without food I'd probably see several spirits revealed in sacred dreams!

Re your comments today: You are really fast, heh? Rum de dum dum!

I will, in fact, have another!

That's wonderful scenery MB. Fascinating how the mountains/hills are formed.
