Woodman

I found this very different grave stone at a cemetary between Sedro Woolley and Burlington. I believe the man was a logger or worked in the woods. His title is Woodman of the Wo...and I can't make out the rest. Either of the Woods or World.

Nice shot! I think Woodman of the World is some sort of fraternal organization.

Most interesting and unusual. From what I can see, he certainly was involved in the woods - probably as a lumberjack.

Woodmen of the World is a fraternal organization based in Omaha, NE, which operates a huge insurance company...kind of like Lutheran Brotherhood.

It is very possible he belonged to that fraternity.

McCree sounds Scottish?

Fascinating!

Yes, Jacob has it right. I just Googled the Woodmen, and it seems they were noted for erecting tombstones such as this across the country before 1930. I know I have seem them before. They are wonderful.

The Woodmen Of The World is a fraternal organization founded by a man named Root to provide life insurance and other benefits to members to promote financial success. The stump tombstones came in a few different varieties and were one of the benefits of membership. They were abandoned in the late 20s due to high cost. One of the largest concentrations of the these headstones is in Brownsville TX although I don't know why.
My dad was a member of this and just about any other fraternal lodge/group/club/organization you can think of.

Okay, first of all, I love the name. William E. McCree? It rhymes!
