Sphinx Moths emerge at dusk from their hiding places and begin feeding on the nectar of flowers. Their size, combined with their rapid wing beats, allow them to hover and feed like hummingbirds, for which they are sometimes mistaken. This manner of flying requires a great deal of energy. To meet its energy needs, the moth feeds exclusively on nectar and seeks flowers which contain high amounts of sugar
I was going to say I dont think I have seen one of these in forever, then I read you have to have flowers. Most of our flower bed is full of ferns and elephant ears, no flowers.
Wow --I've been trying to snap a pic of a hummingbird moth for years. Our local ones are nervous and suspicious--they dart around like mad. I even saw one in the parking lot at the food market yesterday. I thought "why won't you let me get an unblurry picture of you?
then I come here, and you have moths that must adore you.
Your fairy is called Columbine Goblindancer She is a bringer of riches and wealth. She lives in mushroom fields and quiet meadows. She is only seen when the bees swarm and the crickets chirrup. She wears lilac and purple like columbine flowers. She has gentle green wings like a butterfly.

Great photos.
I have never really paid attention to moths in the garden. Maybe I should!

It looks kinda big.
Good catches, MB! I've found they are, like hummers, very hard to get a good picture of because of their rapid, erratic flight.
I'm never fast enough to catch the one that visits our flowers in the early morning on our porch! Good shots!
Wow, that gives new meaning to the term "sugar rush" ... LOL.
Awesome shots and great info. I learn so much on your bolg!
I can't decide if that's creepy or beautiful. :)
Great! A moth that doesnt eat clothes! Love it!
Got your mail :)
Such an interesting looking moth! I don't think I've ever seen one before...
She/he's beautiful MB. Wonderful photos of this amazing moth.
OH! Great photo of the hummingbird moth. Good for you!
Awesome shot, MB. I've never been able to capture one of these sphinx moths in pixels. They are too fast for me.
Wow, well captured!
