Peaviners

It is time to harvest peas in the valley. Peas are usually harvested in June or July but due to the strange, wet and cold spring we had everything is late. Peas used to be the number one crop years ago. Now the small farmers mantra is 'diversify' and that is what one has to do to stay vital. Most of the pea harvest goes to Twin City Foods in Stanwood, a processing plant. The harvest machines are huge and 4-5 are used on one field and they scoop up the pea vines, somehow separate the peas, remove them from their pods, put them in a hopper and shoot the vines out the back of the machine and when the hopper is full the peas are dumped into a large truck and the truck speed to the processing plant where the peas are frozen. And after the vines dry out they are baled for cow feed.

I have to admit I have NEVER seen so many peas all at once. Just about everyone likes peas.

I grow a tiny amount because they are so yummy to eat, pod and all, straight off the vine.

I love fresh peas, and they are very healthy too. I have never seen a field of peas before and it's also very interesting to see the harvesting.

I would have loved to observe this process but thanks to you I get the idea. We have big fields of soy beans and corn in this part of the world. Tobacco at one time was the biggest crop of in my youth growing up in Middle TN. I worked in those fields and barns and glad I had the experience but glad tobacco has fell out of favor. Peace

Lordy, lordy, lordy. Harvesting peas with a combine? I would never have guessed it in a million years. I used to sit on my butt in a row between rows of ripe peas and was supposed to pick them and drop them in a dishpan. And I did that but I also shelled and ate a lot of peas and love them shelled out of their pods and eaten raw. Yum yum.

Pretty neat how they can do all of that work in the machine.

I am always amazed that these huge machines can manage to harvest the crops without completely destroying them. Neat shots!

How interesting MB - I've never seen a machine like this. Great shots and thanks for this wonderful info about a legume I really love to eat.

Fascinating! I marvel at how smart people are to design the big rigs that harvest the crops!!

It amazes "Louis" that something as small as a pea can be mechanically harvested successfully! Very informative!
