Sears Catalog Homes (sold under the Sears Modern Homes name) were catalog and kit houses sold primarily through mail order by Sears, Roebuck and Company, an American retailer. Sears reported that more than 70,000 of these homes were sold in North America between 1908 and 1940.[1] More than 370 different home designs in a wide range of architectural styles and sizes were offered over the program's 33-year history. Hello, it is a cute home. The kit I'm sure was a project for the handy dandy person. It is sad to see Sears closing and going out of business. Have a happy day!
...what a great piece of American history, more so with Sears' recent bankruptcy. My grandmother had a Sears home and I have many fond memories of sleep overs there. Thank Mary Beth for sharing, please stop back again.
I agree with Tom.
I had never heard of these Sears houses, but it reminded me of something else that I will have to show on Tuesday Treasures.
I have heard of these before, but I am still amazed to think of buying a home in a kit!
Have a great week!
They're neat!
I had heard of the bankruptcy, which isn't a surprise. The Canadian branch closed completely a year or two ago.
Never saw this on Whidbey Island! Good find.
Oh I just love it! My grandparents had a Sears kit home too.
That's very cool. I never heard of these before but this house looks great and to think you could pick your house from a catalog, incredible! Thanks for sharing, MB.
These kit homes are such a big part of Americana!
I know just where that house is!
We’ve seen a few of these in our travels. Quite a timely post today as we read about the company’s bankruptcy filing. The article said that once upon a time Sears was “the Amazon of its day.” But it was even more I guess...I don’t think Amazon sells houses!
I've been inside some Sears houses. Wish they still offered them.
Sears was such a big part of our past. Not too happy with it right now. It went into bankruptcy one day before paying off our bond. - Margy
