This avocet has long, thin, gray legs, giving it its common name, "blue shanks". The plumage is black and white on the back with white on the underbelly. The neck and head are cinnamon colored in the summer and gray in the winter. The long, thin bill is upturned at the end. The adult is about 18 inches (45cm) tall.

Nice photos of the Avocets
Pretty little things!
If someone had asked me about avocet, I would have thought of some kind of funny liquor...
NICE! They are one of my favorite shorebirds.
Credits to your daughter!
Lovely creatures:)
Are these the kind that run into shore when the waves start to come in and then run back out to find if any food got left behind when the waves go back out? I could watch them all day.
Very nice! I don't think I have ever seen one before.
At first I thought maybe you were speaking another language...like Martian. They are lovely, elegant birds even with their Bob Hope "noses". :)
Interesting to see a different Avocet to the one we get here; Pied.
Congratulate your daughter on getting this fine close up of this interesting bird. Fine shooting!
Kudos to your daughter for taking such a beautiful photo of an interesting bird!
Beautiful birds!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
These are very nice-looking birds. I wonder if they are as pesky as seagulls.
I would ask some questions, but I can't remember what I want to ask and I know you wouldn't remember the questions, much less the answers, so I'm going to go away now...
...for awhile. I'll be back. Soon!
Your Avocet is lovely. Nices images
