Seed Cabbage

Harvesting seed is huge in the Skagit Valley. Some plants grown for seed are: Spinach, Cabbage, Kale and others. This is a pic of Cabbage going to seed. The first seeds or seedlings are planted in the summer and then wintered over-all the time growing--heads are formed and in the following spring the heads are chopped in half and the plant goes to seed, male plants are weeded out and by fall the plants look pretty dead. The seed heads are chopped down and layed in rows and left until a harvesting machine scoops them up, shake the whey out of them and the seeds are deposited in large boxes on trucks and of to processing they go. Interesting to watch.

Bees are set out in Spring.

Very interesting, MB. I wonder if anyone grows plants for seeds around here. Hmmm. I'll have to ask some farmer friends.

How are the bees doing in Washington? Are they dying in large numbers from Colony Collapse Disorder or are they still healthy?

Reminds me of our mustard green field earlier in the year. Traveling through north Georgia last year we saw some big fields of greens for seeds. They were really a beautiful sight.

Yuck Bees. Me and Bees dont mix well. Nice info about the seed. I always wondered how they do that? Have a great weekend.

An interesting post. I have taken for granted that seed packets just appear, without stopping to think that the seeds have to be grown somewhere (although as a teen I helped my father plant and harvest ArkWin Seed Oats. How quickly (hahaha)one forgets.) I'll not look at seeds the same way again. Thanks.

So seeds from these plants grow the cabbage in my garden? Somehow I'd expect these seeds to generate plants that resemble the plants you show, and not nice heads of cabbage.

Well, I've never seen cabbage go to seed, city girl that I am. Very interesting.

That would be interesting to see.
I harvest my flower seeds every year - saves a great deal of money and I know what I'm getting. Great photos and post MB.
