Heritage Barn

This barn built in 1900 is called the Edler Barn after the first settlers
It was originally used as a dairy barn. The barn is well situated on the land as it is slightly higher than the adjacent field and the cooling breezes blow through it in the summer, yet the worst of the winter storms are blocked. At some point the horizontal braces overhead were cut off to make room for a pulley, and cement was poured on the two sides and half of the main floor area of the barn. The vertical support beams were hand-adzed. The barn was in danger of collapse and has been shored up. Plans are in place to secure the barn.

The pulleys were probably made to pull a gurney filled with manure out of the barn so it could be dumped in a manure pile which, I can tell you from experience, is not a good place to play! This poor old thing does need a lot of TLC of a good wind will blow it to Florida. And we have enough old barns down here. :)

It does look as though it may have a few creaks in the wind.

...Mary Beth, thank for photographing this one while it's still standing. The John Deere out front sure adds to the scene. Enjoy your week and please stop back again.
