Decoration Day

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.

It was originally called Decoration Day. To honor the deceased, soldiers would decorate graves of their fallen comrades with flowers, flags and wreaths. HenceDecoration Day. Although Memorial Day became its official title in the 1880s, the holiday wouldn't legally become Memorial Day until 1967.

Have a Happy and Safe Memorial Day and while you are having fun remember the Fallen

...I haven't heard the term 'Decoration Day' used in years, my dad and always planted flowers on graves for Decoration Day. Thanks for the reminder.

A very nice post, MB, and a good history lesson, too. We so often forget why we do the things we do. Have a wonderful Decoration Day!

I did recall that it originally bore that name.
