Floating a horses teeth

This is Macaronie and he needs his teeth taken care of.  We noticed he wasn't eating as he should and was dropping a few pounds so we call the Vet out and she checks his teeth.

An adult horse may have between 36-44 permanent teeth. And just like humans, your horse gets two sets of teeth in her lifetime. Your horse starts out with temporary baby teeth and by age five, will most likely have her full set of permanent teeth.

The horse's front teeth cut hay and grass, while the top and bottom cheek teeth grind the forage between the flat surfaces in a sideways motion. This grinding action breaks down the food into a pulp before swallowing which helps it to be digested better. If your horse is unable to grind down food all the way due to uneven teeth surfaces, the unchewed food will not be digested as well.

Most often, points develop on the upper cheek teeth toward the outside of the mouth next to your horse's cheek. And on the bottom cheek teeth toward the inside of the mouth next to your horse's tongue. These points can then cut into the cheek and tongue making your horse uncomfortable
Hooking up his headgear.  This is Dr. Dana---she is GREAT.
 Checking out his teeth
Checking everything out with her headlamp
 Positioning the 'float'.
Getting the job done.  See the horse is very calm and allows the Dr. to finish the job.
Back in the day  to float a horses teeth one would grab the tongue and pull it out of the mouth, take a rasp and start filing.  This is  a more humane way.

Super golden Sky and Super Moon

This was the beginning of a great golden sunset over Skagit Bay.
And here is the Super Moon looking surprisingly like any other full moon.  If one saw it at the horizon it seems very large but I don't see it until it climbs all the trees.  --But nice anyway.

More scenes across the Valley

Here are some more scenes across the Skagit Valley.  I parked along side the road and enjoyed my view of some Daffodil fields and some rows of Tulips just coming up and who know what else.  I thought you might enjoy them also.  Taken just before noon yesterday.

Sky Watch across the Valley

Today I woke up to a light dusting of snow---that happens when you live in the foothills.  The sun soon came out and melted the snow.  It was cloudy too.  I drove down in the Skagit Valley to check out ---well everything--and took this shot looking east across the valley.  I love it.

See the snow line---that is the edge where I live. Somewhere.  MB

Jewel-a Horse for all Reasons

On a very cold and rainy Saturday the girls went gaming on their horses.  Jewel is Shannon's horse. Jewel is all business when gaming and racing.  You can tell by the way the girls are dressed that it is very cold.  This is Shannon doing a Flag Race.  The object is to grab the flag out of the little can and race down the arena and deposit the flag in another little can.  All the time while going very fast as it is a timed event.
Here is Kylee and her friend Go-Go on the rescue race.  One rider rides the horse bareback down the arena where the other rider is waiting with saddle and pad.  They have to saddle up--make sure the cinch is tight--and then race back to the other end.  This is a timed event also.  But very funny and lots of spills and lots of laughing.
And here is Kylee on her horse Macaronie racing down the stretch to home in a heartwon race.

Avocets and WBW

My daughter in Ritzville took this picture.
This avocet has long, thin, gray legs, giving it its common name, "blue shanks". The plumage is black and white on the back with white on the underbelly. The neck and head are cinnamon colored in the summer and gray in the winter. The long, thin bill is upturned at the end. The adult is about 18 inches (45cm) tall.
