The state of Washington is divided by the Cascade Mountains. West side wet--east side dry. This area of Eastern Washington is amazing and beautiful in its own way.
1. Look at the great basalt
2. Nice ranch
3. Look at how another event formed the middle of this wall. Like a giant ball of lava rolled through
4. An overview of a small part of the coulee

A number of dry basalt coulees course through Eastern Washington. Moses Coulee, like many other coulees and canyons, was carved from solid basalt by huge floods. These floods occurred at the end of the last ice age between 15,000 and 10,000 years ago by a giant lake in Montana- Glacial Lake Missoula. The lake was formed from immense quantities of meltwater, and was dammed by ice. When the ice dam broke loose during warmer periods, enormous floods were released across Montana, Idaho and Washington States. The floods from this lake did not happen only once, but up to 60 different floods occurred. This violent erosive force is responsible for creating many of the geological features of Eastern Washington including the 'scab-lands'- so called because the floods scoured much of the topsoil from underlaying basalt, and created coulees and canyons that cut across the otherwise flat landscape.
another amazing captures mary beth.
have a nice day!!!
As you said...amazinfg and beautiful, i like the texture that basalt gives.
I just saw the video, its avaiable.
Great pics. This looks like a wonderful area and reminds me of part of Colorado.
The power of the earth is staggering and it can bend rocks -- no, mountains.
That’s interesting stuff. I knew how the basalt formed but I did not know about the floods.
I do have to admire anyone who can live someplace like the Moses Lake area of Eastern Washington. The barren land would drive me to drinking. I need water and mountains.
Those vertical lines of basalt create a powerful image - great shots. I was in Eastern Washington once many years ago - I remember lots of brown lands, and the smell of sage in the heat of summer.
Beautiful pictures, MB, really impressive!
I find basalt very fascinating!
Good night, I go to sleep now, its 00:21 here in Vienna... :-O)
Wow, that really goes back and I am not quite that old to remember. LOL. It looks like an interesting place to visit but it is not green enough for this Kitty. In other words Me paws would rather rest on the other side of the mountains. Peace
Oh, yes. I love the geology of that area. Wheb the earth is bare, with no vegetation to obscure it, you can really see that we live on a living planet.
Gosh you can see the staggering force of the floods in the third photo - these are very fascinating MB. Thanks for the info too as my first reaction was volcanic not floods. Amazing captures!
My partner has used to be a geologist/encironmental scientist, so
he is mesmerised by this. It does look the most specatuclar place. Just love mother nature.
Nice scenery there =) It looks like it came straight out of a movie!
I'm just dropping by and saying hi =)
Very dramatic stuff! I love it. Moses would have loved it too.
