Haying just down my road. this type of haying is called hay-lage. Haylage is simply forage that is baled at a higher moisture content than dry hay and then stored in a sealed plastic wrap. Because of the high moisture level and air-tight environment, the forage ferments and is preservd by acid production during fermantation. This method has certain advantages and disadvantages over other forage harvesting and preservation systems.

They do look like marshmallows. Who has the hot chocolate?
Too funny! I never noticed that they look like marshmallows before, but now I'm going to laugh each time I see a field full of them!!
Very interesting. Most hay around here is NOT covers so it fascinates me that it's covered where you are. I don't understand why they want it to ferment.
I just hope you don’t feed your horses this before you go riding if it is fermented. You might have a very interesting ride. (lol)
To tell you the truth I had wondered why they wrap them and now I know. Interesting.
Thanks for this info MB - I wondered about the wrap too - I guess they're just like a mini silo but much less dangerous and a whole heap less expensive.
LOL. Those size marshmallows would make giant size smores.
We call our uncovered rolls, shredded wheat. Peace
Love the title. I too will now laugh when I see them.
I wondered why they would wrap them, knowing the dangers of wet hay spontaneously combusting and burning down barns. But now I get it - air tight, no combustion, can be stored outside, fermented like silage.
Thanks!
And I always thought marshmallows came from Campfire Girls :)
Interesting. I haven't seen that type of haying being done around here -- yet.
WOW!!! Giant goodies!!! I wanna go there!!! Ah ah ah!
Thank you Thanks MB for your nice comments! I was really lucky with the weather AND the camera LOL!...
Looks like somebody dumped a bag of marshmallows out.
Patty and I will be celebrating 53 years of marriage on July 12th. Think of it as a long-term relationship.
I have invited bloggers to offer suggestions on a gift for me to give Patty and the list would not be complete without your ideas.

"Louis" always wondered where marshmallows were grown....
Over at San Francisco Bay Daily Photo, "Louis" and his 'Editor' Yell at each other both in the text and in the comments....
I've seen that in Austria, too.
Very amusing.
Beautiful! I've never seen this before. Is it sold at feed stores?
How does it not mold? I don't get it, why do they want it to ferment? My mother doesn't even know the answer to that one.
LOL! Great shot and great title! Imagine them roasted!
