Good Luck Lady Bug

Coccinellid is a family of Beetles also known as Ladybirds and Lady Beetles.
when I worked in the greenhouse we sold many packets of Ladybugs that went into gardens for aphid control--that is if they would stay in your yard.

Coccinellids are generally considered useful insects as many species feed on aphids or scale insects, which are pests in gardens, agricultural fields, orchards, and similar places. The Mall of America, for instance, releases thousands of ladybugs into its indoor park as a natural means of pest control for its gardens[2]. Some people consider seeing them or having them land on one's body to be a sign of good luck to come, and that killing them presages bad luck

I love photos of bugs and things...I hope to get a mac lens someday to play with...Our cat, skeeter, is 16 years old. She has never been ill, and just keeps on like she is a baby.
On a trip to Ky she jumped from our truck and was missing for 3 days in Oregon, until a lady who we had given our number to, called to say she found her. She loves our dogs too.
I hope you find your cat soon.

Fly away home! I also heard the part about good luck if they land on you. Lovely photo today, MB.

I never heard nothing about good luck. Here we sing a special song when we have one :)

When I was a little girl we used to catch them, make a wish, and then blow on them to make them fly away for good luck.

I've always wondered why gardeners bought them though, since they have wings and... well, they do fly away. ;-) Much better to grow hollyhocks and not cut the stalks down till spring because ladybugs like to winter over in the hollow stems.

Ladybug flies fly
Ladybug flies fly
your father is in Lisbon
Your mother in Mill
eating bread with bacon
Ladybug flies fly
your father is in Lisbon
With a butt of sardines
To eat, that more had not

Fly, fly Ladybug
that your father is in Lisbon
with a soup of chicken
to give the Ladybug.
Fly, fly Ladybug,
that your father is in Lisbon
with a butt of sardines
to eat, that most had not.

LOL
Funny translation!!!!

Lady bugs seem to make everyone smile - and that's another benefit they bring!

I love ladybugs too! They are so cute and colorful and helpful in the garden. I remember when people starting buying them by the hundreds to put in their gardens, but of course some of them would fly to their neighbors' yards. Suddenly those people were buying pesticides and pressure washing the poor little things off their houses! Like it was a plague or something!! It was horrible and made me so mad - as you can tell, it's been a decade and I'm still seething. I ran around trying to tell all those non-gardener types that the ladybugs were not going to hurt them and they were beneficial, even to their houseplants. We still try to bring a handful indoors in the fall to overwinter on our plants and eat any mites...
